I, personally, am writing a non-GPL alternative in part to end legal actions I started.
But I wouldn't _bother_ if i didn't think I could do a better job, from an engineering perspective. (http://landley.net/toybox/design.html http://landley.net/toybox/code.html ).
I tried to push some of these ideas upstream into busybox (when I met Denys in person at Celf 2010), but BusyBox has been playing the Katamri Damacy theme for years now and that #ifdef salad is just no fun to bang on anymore:
