The screen is 2880x1800 - if I understand it correctly, any application that doesn't set some magic flag to say that it knows how to deal with high density screens just gets told that the screen is 1440x900 and asking to draw a 10x10 square results in a 20x20 one being drawn instead, but whenever it asks to draw text the OS can use the full resolution so it's more readable. But I'm also not an Apple person, so I may be wrong on the details.
