No, you've probably explained it not too badly. So sites I've designed to work best at 1440 x 900 will display as they would on a regular unRetina'd 1440 x 900 display unless I give the Retina the magic flag...I wonder if double pixel density in that case makes font hinting go though the roof. I've never been fond of Apple's dark, blurry fonts, but this is just making me envision more of the same.
