Putting aside the added complexity at the controller end from encapsulating DisplayPort for the moment, most monitors with DisplayPort connectors don't speak DisplayPort encapsulated in Thunderbolt, they just speak normal DisplayPort. Which means that Thunderbolt host ports not only have to speak both, but Thunderbolt devices presumably need to be able to de-encapsulate it and output DisplayPort in order to support device chaining. Then the host needs to know how to configure all this and the associated display routing.
