Disturbingly enough, that is precisely how many laws, especially regarding child abuse and age of consent, work. US, as usual, excels in doing that:

But NY is not the only place to do this kind of thing, and it's not the only setting it happens in. And it's exactly where this kind of witch hunt mentality leads. Instead of allowing discussion and asking "how can we change our current approach to make sure we solve more problems and create fewer side-effects", people go "HOW DARE YOU NOT WANT TO BURN THE ACCUSED ON STAKE, YOU APOLOGIST". And I'm more than saddened to see mjg59, of all people, engage in such display of toxic thinking.
