I rephrase my above statement. Linux is for people who are willing to be open to ideas because Linux is an idea that is open. It's true that the LightDM may have been a bit overenthusiastic when they suggested it as a replacement for GDM in GNOME, but it doesn't seem as though your post is primarily targeted at that.
