Let's not forget that Mir acts as a system compositor in Ubuntu. This does one important thing: it allows them to get rid of VT switching, which is ugly and problematic. From the end user standpoint, if you've gained a system compositor, LightDM can now be used as lock screen, user/session switching is much smoother and you can now run several concurrent sessions in multi-head setups.
