That isn't revisionist at all. KDE 4.0 was clearly marked as unstable and not ready for general consumption by the developers before it was released, KDE 4.1 was (in their words) for enthusiasts and people that wanted to take the risk. The first version that was ready for general consumption and given the approval of developers to be considered like that was KDE 4.2 and was fairly stable and complete. In fact, one of the problems of KDE is that it hasn't evolved too much since the KDE 4.2 or 4.3 days.
