When you apply to YC, you have to give your HN id. Since, HN will shadow ban anyone who thinks for yourself, and your ability to get into YC is gated on having a good "rep" on HN, you must spend years mindlessly agreeing tot he party line, before you have a chance to get into YC.
This means that anyone who thinks for themselves will not get into YC. This is good for YC because it's business model is to groom kids to be exploited by "venture" capitalists. It's very much like a pedophile site, only instead of sex, its' about money. Either way, PG gets his rocks off.
It does also reinforce the cult of personality around Paul Graham, and to hype up YC companies to make them seem legitimate, as you say.
