A good rebuttal to that is https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=676898 Some Gnome developers decided that people didn't want to tweak the date field in nautilus so 'fixed' it resulting in nautilus being forked multiple times now.

Everyone's workflow is different enough that an OS can't make a good non-tweakable judgement call on some things like the above.
