Anyone who has tried to maintain a nontrivial GNU/Linux desktop application for 5+ years, especially outside of the DE ivory towers, knows exactly why the the GNU/Linux desktop is still not viable.
I like Matt's idea's but it's a cart before the horse. The horse is long-term work on accessibility, consistency, documentation, and API stability.
