What sort of "new players"? Commercial? They'll have the exact same issues that Apple has. Non-commercial? They won't have nearly the resources that a commercial entity has (indeed nowhere near what Apple has, which dwarfs other companies).

Or put another way, if this hypothetical entity's priority is not their own subsistence, what are the odds of them subsisting? Do I really want to put my trust in such an organization?
