As many other, I prefer much more the Debian way of managing the updates than the dev way of breaking things constantly.
But there is an intermediate way: The backports repository is open for providing new stuff for Debian stable. Maybe it's something to discuss with the package maintainer? It may be less frustrating for you and the users to have an up to date version of xscreensaver in backports ?
