I basically do the opposite: I use it to lock the screen, with animations disabled. There are other programs to do this, but some want to pull in huge "desktop environments" and many have horrific CVE histories. XScreenSaver has had some security bugs, but handles screen-locking better that any other program I've seen. And probably about as well as one can manage without redesigning X.
