I could get i915 really verbose by drm.debug=0xe boot param. Having looked through the journal I found:
kernel: [drm:intel_psr_enable] PSR not supported by this panel kernel: [drm:intel_edp_drrs_enable] Panel doesn't support DRRS
i.e. PC3 is the best I can achieve on native resolution. I'm not going to run at a reduced resolution finally, but will give it a try to see if it makes any difference.
