If this applied only to corporate users, it might be reasonable, though for very specialised software it could reveal information that they reasonably want to keep secret (e.g. that they're working on a new product line).
Couldn't I potentially learn the same information by "reading between the lines" of any changes they make to the software? Probably not in every case. Your point is well taken about privacy, especially for non-corporate, individual users.
