Unlock with usb-drive

Is there a way to put a passkey or something onto a drive, which then unlocks the whole thing?

I know this sounds bad, but the use case:
-Laptop is mostly used at home (unencrypted right now).
-When traveling you just remove a usb-stick and it only starts with a password.

I know, a hardware token would be better, but I have given up on that ever working for boot.
