I would say that the business leaders might not know why freedom and data safety are important, but the do know that is valuable; it follows that they understand controlling, subverting, and polluting it to be a source of profit.
The money, in politics, legislation, and mass media coverage, follow the money in a profitable corrption of freedom and data safety.
