A point I think you fail to touch on is that if a firmware is burnt into a rom with no means to replace it then you can't replace that non-free firmware with a Free one. Clearly it would be best if the manufacturers supplied a Free firmware in the first place but it's a non-trivial number of useful devices which have had Free firmwares written for them later.
