Dug up a DP->HDMI cable to actually see the HDMI edid.
I think the random differences between the EDIDs are the best part... model number is different, max size changes from 43cm x 27cm (correct) to 16 cm x 9 cm (ha).
HDMI extension block claims three modes - 720x480, 1920x540 and 1920x1080. xrandr doesn't see/select them (and X doesn't really drive it right even at the 'native' 1680x1050.) But, this is not bugzilla, so, eh, whatever. Hardware sucks.
