One thing that helps is to put your taskbar at the side of the screen. This works beautifully in Windows; some Linux taskbars don't support it very well, but most should by now. Not only do you gain back precious vertical space, but you have room for a ton of windows, icons, etc on the taskbar this way.
If you don't have an account you can create one now.
